Dr. Brian Kaufman

Interventional Pain Management
Addiction Medicine

Dr. Kaufman left New York, driven by a desire to ease pain and suffering. His intellectual curiosity led him first to med school and then through a broad educational pathway which connected him with many different tools for healing. He joined Northeast Pain in 2023 and is delighted to have a chance to apply all he has learned.

As a medical student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), Dr. Kaufman spent additional time training in anatomy and osteopathic manipulation, and after residency did extra training in neuro-musculo-skeletal medicine and this led to a career in pain management. Throughout his practice he has seen firsthand how untreated pain affects a person and their family.

Dr. K utilizes his expertise in ultrasound and X-Ray guided injections, osteopathic manipulation, home exercise programs and a patient centered approach to improve his patients’ function and health and to reduce their pain. He uses a trauma informed approach to evaluate the whole person, their pain and function, and believes all patients should be treated with compassion and respect.

In addition to his 4 board certifications in Pain Medicine, Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (NMM), Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine, he practices clinical hypnosis.

His interests include teaching and he is adjunct faculty at UNECOM and has authored chapters in Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine, one of the primary textbooks used in all osteopathic medical schools, as well as articles in journals. He lectures at state and national conferences and has chaired committees both nationally and statewide and has served as president of the Maine Osteopathic Association.

Dr. K uses his free time with his family, traveling, playing with pets (2 dogs, 1 cat, 3 chickens, 2 ducks and a pig!) and is a long-time musician.
